James 1:19-25: Hearers and Doers

Sermon Overview:

Main idea: Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.

  1. Hearing the Word (v. 19-21)

  2. Doing the Word (v. 22-25)

Reflection:

  • What kind of hearer are you? How do you approach God’s Word? Do you come to it talking, or listening? Do you ever respond to the Word with a combative, argumentative, or angry spirit?

  • How can we grow to receive the Word with meekness?

  • What does it mean to be a hearer and a doer? Why is the order of those things important? How is James’ call for obedience different from an attempt to earn a right standing before God (a.k.a. works-righteousness)
