How to Read and Understand Old Testament Law
Sermon Overview
Christians are under the new covenant, not the old covenant.
What, Then, Do We Do With the Law Of Moses?
Moral law: The moral law refers to God’s unchanging moral standard, seen most clearly in, but not limited to, the 10 commandments. Moral laws are always binding.
Civil Laws: Laws that taught Israel how to function as a nation in the promised land. Civil laws are no longer binding, except in their underlying moral principles.
Ceremonial laws: Laws that taught Israel how to worship God and be set apart under the old covenant. Ceremonial laws are no longer binding.
Why does this topic matter?
The more you understand the law, the more you’ll understand the gospel.
Reflection
When you hear the word “law”, what do you think? What comes to mind?
What was the big-picture purpose of the old covenant law? (see Romans 3:20, Galatians 3:19).
What do the categories of moral, civil, and ceremonial law mean, and how do they apply to us differently? Do you find these helpful? Why or why not?
Why is studying the law important? How can this be an encouragement?
