How to Read and Understand Old Testament Law

Sermon Overview

  • Christians are under the new covenant, not the old covenant.

  • What, Then, Do We Do With the Law Of Moses?

    • Moral law: The moral law refers to God’s unchanging moral standard, seen most clearly in, but not limited to, the 10 commandments. Moral laws are always binding.

    • Civil Laws: Laws that taught Israel how to function as a nation in the promised land. Civil laws are no longer binding, except in their underlying moral principles.

    • Ceremonial laws: Laws that taught Israel how to worship God and be set apart under the old covenant. Ceremonial laws are no longer binding.

  • Why does this topic matter?

    • The more you understand the law, the more you’ll understand the gospel.

Reflection

  • When you hear the word “law”, what do you think? What comes to mind?

  • What was the big-picture purpose of the old covenant law? (see Romans 3:20, Galatians 3:19).

  • What do the categories of moral, civil, and ceremonial law mean, and how do they apply to us differently? Do you find these helpful? Why or why not?

  • Why is studying the law important? How can this be an encouragement?
