Exodus 1:1-7: Setting the Stage

Sermon Overview

  • Exodus is part of the Torah (or “Pentateuch”): the first 5 books of the Bible, written by Moses.

  • Exodus has 3 major parts:

    • Act 1: Egypt (chapters 1-15)

    • Act 2: The Wilderness (chapters 16-18)

    • Act 3: Mount Sinai (chapters 19-40)

  • Why Exodus?

    • Exodus helps us to better understand Scripture

      • The exodus is not the first “exodus” in the Bible (see Gen. 12:10-20)

      • The exodus is not the last exodus in the Bible

    • Exodus helps us to better understand God

      • God is the god of exodus (Exod. 20:2)

      • He is the sovereign king

      • Exod. 34:6-7

Reflection

  • How do you approach the OT? Do you resonate with the museum or hall of fame analogies? What is wrong about these, and how should we approach the OT instead?

  • Were you surprised to learn that getting stuck in Egypt was part of God's plan all along? What does this teach us about God and the way he works through hard things in our lives?

  • Think about the sentence "God is faithful to bring about that which he requires of his people." What do you think this means? How do we see this on display in Exodus already? How do we see God doing this in our lives today?
